FAQ

1) Witnesser's commitments and certificates value

1.1 How secure is certificate's electronic signature ?
100% secure. It uses the same encryption algorithms that are used to protect any data on the web. There is no possibility for anyone to fake being Witnesser and issue a document on our behalf, and there is no possibility for anyone to alter a certificate issued by Witnesser without the electronic signature becoming void.
1.2 How can someone check whether electronic signature is valid for a certificate ?
Open the Pdf document in Adobe Reader.

You might also need to let Adobe Reader update its list of Trusted Certificates.
1.3 Is electronic signature recognized by the law ?
Yes, in many countries, including the USA and EU. You can find more details on Wikipedia.
1.4 What does Witnesser commit to or guarantee ?
After its beta testing phase, Witnesser will commit its legal responsibility on the following :
  • That Witnesser's server indeed generated the certificate
  • That Witnesser's server indeed had the exchange of messages that is described in the certificate, with the responses as described
However, Witnesser is currently in beta testing. As a consequence, Witnesser disclaims any responsibility whatsoever, and you can use this website at your own risk only.

Witnesser does not commit to the following items, which lie outside of Witnesser's responsibility :
  • That your certificate will be accepted as an admissible evidence in court
  • That the evidence described in your certificate will play a role in winning your legal procedure
1.5 I opened a certificate in Adobe Reader, but it says "validity of the document is UNKNOWN"
If the document comes from Witnesser, then the issue is probably that you need to let Adobe Reader update its list of Trusted Certificates.

2) Confidentiality

2.1 Will anyone know that I signed up to Witnesser, or authorized Witnesser to access my data on Facebook, Twitter or Gmail ?
No, if you chose the right settings on Facebook.
This information will not be communicated to anyone by Witnesser. If you chose the right settings on Facebook, this information will not be accessible to anyone, unless someone has access to your email, or to a Facebook, Twitter, or Gmail account for which you authorized Witnesser.
If you don't authorize Witnesser to access your data on Facebook, you don't need to chose any settings on Facebook.
If you do authorize Witnesser to access your data on Facebook, and if you wish to keep it confidential, you need to go to Facebook's app settings and check that Witnesser's visibility is set to 'Only me' :

3) Privacy and use of data

3.1 Why do I need to authorize Witnesser to access my data on Facebook, Twitter or Gmail ?
In order to witness some content on one of these sources, Witnesser needs to be able to communicate directly with it, on your behalf. You can find more info here :
3.2 What data will Witnesser read from my profiles (Facebook, Twitter, Gmail...) ?
  • As long as you keep Witnesser authorized to access your profiles, Witnesser will only read the data that you ask it to read, when you browse to select something to witness, or when you request Witnesser to witness some data.
  • The only data that are stored are the data that you request Witnesser to witness.
  • After you remove access from Witnesser to your data, none of it will be read anymore.
3.3 Do I need to give Witnesser my password to access my data on Facebook, Twitter or Gmail ?
No.
Witnesser uses a protocol called OAuth so that you can grant access to your data without ever giving your password to anyone. This protocol also ensures that you can revoke access anytime. See next question.
3.4 After having witnessed some evidences, how can I remove Witnesser's access to my data ?
Each one of the services for which you authorized Witnesser enables you to easily stop this authorization. Once done, Witnesser won't have access to your data anymore. You can find the links to revoke access here.
3.5 Under whose responsibility falls the concern of privacy of the data witnessed as evidence ?
Yours.
Witnesser is only able to view the data that you are able to view. When generating a certificate, it is intended for you, and any use that you make of it, by giving access to it to a third person is your responsibility towards the author of the data that was initially witnessed.
3.6 Can Witnesser show me, or witness, some data to which I don't have access ?
No.
Witnesser doesn't have access to data to which you don't have access. The only things we can show you or witness are the data that you are yourself able to see on the internet.
